Saronne
Hi, My understanding is that purebred French Wheaton Marans lay beautiful dark brown eggs as do Copper Blue and Copper Black Marans (purebred). As for their size, they are considered a dual purpose bird and therefore have the potential to be a fairly weighty chook...others will be able to tell you from first hand experience... saronne x
smanners
I recently bought and hatched 3 fertile really dark chesnut/mahogany Marans' eggs under a broody. I ended up with a blue Marans, a French Copper black and a French Copper blue Marans. The breeder told me that the French Wheaton Marans' egg is dark but not as dark as the French Copper Black or FC Blue Marans. So if you want a very dark egg get a French Copper Black I also have a 10 week old Cuckoo Marans. Looking at their ears and considering the egg colour they hatched from they should lay a lovely dark brown egg. They are quite big birds at 15 weeks and I'm sure Marans' are classed as heavy breeds. ( I've got a hybrid Blubelle which is a blue Marans base but in fact my speckledy hen is much bigger) My girls are very friendly and super hens. I think I'm right in saying Marans' eggs are naturally salmonella free because they are less porous than other eggs
chooksy
Hiya! I have a Cuckoo Maran but she's not started laying yet. I'd love a Copper Black/Blue Maran - one day ey?! I have a Welsummer - she is lovely! Her eggs are my favourite hen, her eggs are dark brown and soooo yummy!! In the future, when I have more room (dreams!), I'd love a few more Welsummer. I highly recommend them! H x
Redwing
I think Welsummers may be slightly smaller than Marans too
