jellykelly
Having added height to the run yesterday I had a go at keeping the chickens enclosed for the afternoon so that could eat their pellets without the distraction of anything else. Obviously they also done their business in the run which, I cleared up as best I could as I hate flies. Well, this morning at around 9 I walked into the run (chickens were free ranging) and it was moving. There were flies on the floor, on the perch, on the wood of the fencing - It was really gross!!! I did read somewhere that spraying the area with a wash up liquid solution should help. It did - all the time I was in there. As soon as I stepped out, the flies were back. Are there any other solutions out there to getting rid/minimising flies?? Thankyou
Raina
My mum bought something called a red top fly trap or you could get tons of venus fly traps. don't get those sticky fly traps,my aunt got her hair stuck in one, they had to cut her hair to get it out
annettec
We had a similar prob and so bought a red top fly catcher about £8.50 from E bay. It is absolutely full of flies and is disgusting and a little smelly but there are virtually no flies around the chickens or their run. I have just bought another one as it is almost full and looks disgusting so would advise putting it somewhere not in view but really works !! sandyhas3chucks
I have had one HELL of a problem. really really bad, had me close to tears & considering moving. this is what I have done & do. hope it helps. 1stly purchase large volumes of good old fly papers. £1 for box of 4. At one tome I was using 40!!!!! every 3/4 days. I positioned them approx 4- 5 feet off the ground not higher as they suggest(personal trial & error) I pick up virtually immediately and place a coiled flypaper on the spot putting upturned wire hanging basket over it to stop chickens getting covered in it(again, unhappy experience) I also DO NOT hang in trees wher baby tits etc get caught(yes more exp) I also reinstalled fly traps as no better or worse wuith or withut, but at least carch zillions! I too bought some Natural flea kiler Strikeback(this was on advice from EH officer who also has chooks) I seem to get approx 3 fresh bloos of the nasties a day, depending on heat! when they are there I move girls to dif part of garden and spray the~~~~~!!!!!!! when it is dried . not long girls can come back, but I sort of have 3 sections that I can use. I have also seen flys roosting restinf 5-6 ft on fences huney suckle etc. so spray here too. one week on from War starting and I have a "normal" fly situation. good luck. I hate hate hate them too!!!!!!!!!
