I bought 4kg from Ebay on 3 May. I've just finished the 3rd out of 4 bags.

 

So I seem to be using less than 1kg a month - is that more or less than you ?

Much less!!!! I am getting through a kg in 7-10 days

How much do you put in a grub? A handful or less..... We have 11 chooks though, how many do you have?

I had 3 until recently and now have 5 (who have only been here a week so don't really count as bokashi consumers yet!)

 

I don't put it straight into the grub, I fill a large plastic box with pellets, garlic powder, poultry spice and bokashi bran which lasts a few weeks. So it's hard to say how much I put in but I'd say perhaps 1/3 of a 1kg bag?

Just off the top of my head, I use far less than you do and it still firms up the poo very well. A 5k bag lasted for nearly a year for my four hens.

 

I have had very bad service from Wriggly Wrigglers on more than one occasion, so I'm glad I don't need Bokashi bran more often!

I am wondering if I am being too liberal, so will cut down, I've also found a place were it's £6 a kg and free delievery, so might try that and order it when I need it

I notice you have Orpington's (or a variation of) in your signature quickcluck. I have two Splash Orp bantam's and they pick through the food searching for the bran - they absolutely love it and my two Araucanas don't get a look in until it has all been rooted out and eaten! I quickly gave up sprinkling it on the poo tray as they were going in and trying to stretch through the roosting bars to eat it.

This may be the place you found it at £6 per kg but if not, I've used him and was very impressed. It was very well packaged and arrived promptly. It is cheaper than £6 if you buy more than 1kg (it's quite a lot to spend though .)

I've had good service from Mr Youlip too! He packs in biodegradable plastic bags rather than paper which means the bran is moist - but I don't know if that's a good thing or not...

I got 4 x 1 kg bags from that chap, which did seem slightly damp (or damper than the last lot I bought elsewhere) but they've all lasted so far with no ill effects.

You can read about it here . It's really good for firming up the poos and reducing the smell. It's good for their digestion too .

Originally designed for bokashi bins, an indoor composting system. (Plenty of info on the web about these. It's what I use mine for at the moment.) The "effective micro-organisms" are produced as a liquid and must be soaked into something to make it easy to transport. This is usually bran (therefore edible) but I have heard of someone soaking newspaper sheets for their bin system. This is why the bran can be moist or dry depending on the packaging.

It a bran and you add it to the pellets, it helps keep the poo less squity and less smelly!

 

I can not live without it!

Just ordered some from omlet to try. Never used it before but am hoping for good results and an easier time cleaning out the poo trays!
