thebdj Posted August 31, 2009 Share Posted August 31, 2009 Hi again! I have 2 heatlamps both currently sporting 250W bulbs. Something is telling me that is going to be chronically hot for the new arrivals! They are going to be in two neighbouring little runs. The first run is about 2'6 x 2'6 and they will progress to the next one which is 5' x 2'6. Given that I currently only have 14 maximum, hatching, does a 250W bulb seem a bit mega! Can I achieve what I need with something smaller. This is all being conducted in the shed and my wife is now reviewing the fire damage elements of our Home and Contents Insurance Policy Advice needed again! I put the heat lamp right at one end of the pen so they can get as far away from it as possible if they're hot. I never find them directly under it but they're usually close by. You wouldn't believe how difficult it is to find guidance or advice on what lamps to use for the number of chicks or area you have them in. I am comfortable with the height of the lamp and whether or not the chicks are too warm or too cold, just needed a baseline. Redwing Posted August 31, 2009 Share Posted August 31, 2009 There is such a thing as a plug in dimmer switch which would help you adjust the heat Its like one of those plug in timers but has a dimmer switch on, you plug it in to the socket then the lamp in to that Heat lamp bulbs are expensive so I wouldnt be surprised if the dimmer comes in cheaper and is more versatile Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lesley Posted September 1, 2009 Share Posted September 1, 2009 We started with a 250W bulb as they are the only ones stocked by our nearest Countrwide - it heated the whole of the spare bedroom!!! We changed to a Dull Emitter bulb - they provide heat but no light. We use them because the chicks are then used to normal daytime and nighttime before they go to live outside.
