2 dead birds in a week

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

At the begining of last week I had 9 chickens now I have 7. Last week Our last original omlet hen died (I found her when I came home from work). I didnt really think about it too much as she was nearly 4 and though it was just general old age. Now this morning I found another one of my hens dead in the omlet. There is no sign of any damage or anything unpleasant the only slight thing I did notice on her was a wet nose/beak just clear liquid.

Now as I said the old bird I was fine about but the 2nd one going is a bit sus to me as she is probably only a year and a half old. I'm really hoping that it is just conincedence but I wondered what you guys and girls thought.

The other thing I noticed this morning is I need to give then a dusting with the mite powder as they are starting to appear.

:( Aw, sorry to hear about that, it's sad to lose two close together.

However, it's mostly likely that those 2 in one week is sad, but not significantly coincidental.

The older one's time had come, and the younger one had a health problem. Whatever the cause, I'd be inclined to give the others a big health check anyway, whether or not they all seem well at the moment. Any coughs & sneezes, I'd think differently.

I'd definitely worm them all with Flubenvet, and do all the lice/mite preventions as you are, then you can be assured they're not run down due to parasites. Even if mites are a factor, they were probably both disguising something else too.

Knowing you're up to date with the animal husbandry, you can assume it was "one of those things". You wouldn't think it odd a month apart, and a week is no different, except to the owner. Doesn't seem right looking at 7 instead of 9, does it?

All the best, do keep us up to date. :)
