Chucky Mama
I don't give my chickens any supplements other that Poultry Spice (got given some as a present ) but on of my girls is moulting big time - thought there had been an 'incident ' there are so many feathers around the garden. I now feel that I should give a supplement just to see her through her moult. Any suggestions?
The Dogmother
TBH, I never found that to be any use at all. I have just discovered alfalfa (see this thread) which, on the face of it ought to be good. I am trying my girls on it as they are slacking off on the egg laying and gearing up to a moult. So far the results seem to be good, but I'd like to see them through an entire moult on it before reporting back. A friend is an animal nutritionist and I have asked her to look into all the amino acid gubbinses that are in it and tell me what she thinks. Space Chick
Protein is good for them during a moult, so I'd get some dried mealworms
Chucky Mama
Hmm, interesting about the alfalfa Claret and they already chomp their way through a fair few mealworms Space Chick thank you though. I may have a look at that food that is mentioned in the alfalfa thread as I need to order some food. I have to say that I am not normally a fan of supplements for the sake of it as feel that I give a balanced diet which is 'supplemented' by free ranging but as this moult looks like a real doozy I felt that I wanted to top up somehow. Mind you Minerva did scoff a frog yesterday, don't know how much protein they contain
The Dogmother
Sometimes they are just knocked sideways by the moult, and extra protein that they need to grow all those new feathers is taken out of their reserves. So any extra they can get really helps.
Chucky Mama
I was going to have a look at the Garvo food mentioned on the alfalfa thread but really need an online supplier. Do you have any recommendations for good feed suppliers and I would like to look at different feed options.
The Dogmother
I usually just use Smallholder pellets, and sometimes mix in their BHWT crumb. I found that it increased egg production slightly, but that feeding them solely on that started them off producing soft shells. Once I started cutting it into their regular feed, the problem was solved.
jomaxsmith
My local poultry centre suggested I put my girls on growers' mash to build them back up again while they're moulting Jo
