Advice please: new hen introductions!

Recommended Posts

Anyone got any helpful tips?

At the weekend I'll be picking up 2 new POL chooks, to add to my free-ranging (new-ish) flock of 5 (all POL bar one, who's currently in a scraggy moult  ).

This flock was in itself made up of one set 3, and one of 2, and although they range together, there still seems to be a slight, but amicable, split.

I only have one henhouse, and have read that it works well to introduce the new hens at night, once the originals are roosting.

My question is - what will I do with them the next day? With the original hens, I kept them locked inside for a few days, but amn't sure if I can do that with the new girls, as the others will be locked out! And the weather's not great up here in the frozen north at the moment...

Would it be okay just to let the new girls out in the morning, or will they get lost and not know where to roost?!

Help! :)

I'm trying to integrate 2 new birds (Grace and Elsie) with 3 existing ones (although all are under a week with us).

I too haven't got alternative nesting or run, but this is what I've done and fingers crossed it is working okay.

All 5 in the Cube and there is no fighting. In the morning, original 3 are out and feed and drink. 2 newbies have a look and come halfway down the ladder.

We let the 3 originals to range, close the door and the 2 newbies stay in the run. Water out for the ranging birds. Get corned in the late afternoon separately, and the 3 return to the run,as the 2 new ones go back to the cube. At night time everyone sleeps together again.

Don't know why they get on at night (must be due the dark or something) but not in the day just yet, but it gives both sides to get confidence.

Doris was the worst to accept the new ones, but she is spending more time with them and so I am hoping she will be peace maker going forwad. I am not an expert and so far have used "Wildmum" and "chicken wiggle" as my mentor advisors so far!!

(cube green)

PP - Doris

GNR - Hilda

GNR - Marjorie

(white chicken) - Grace

(white chicken) - Elsie
