Broody cage questions

Recommended Posts

I know that there's lots of info regarding broody cages on the forum, but I haven't been able to find the answers to my specific question, so please bear with me... :)

I have been looking for a puppy crate for a broody cage, but they are either ridiculously expensive (£50 anyone? :shock: ), or they are from online shops, and I am unsure of the floor layout, since you can't quite tell from the photos. Clear as mud?

For example, I have seen a very reasonably priced crate here, but I am unsure whether the bars will be too far apart once the floor has been removed, but you can't quite tell from the photo. I saw a very expensive one in Pets At Home, and when the floor was removed, the gaps between the bars was huge, and my two broodies are only dinky bantams (one a Silkie - superminichicken!).

So where did people get their crates, and are the bars too far apart?

Also, in the meantime, I have used one of the old ferret cages, upside down - it is in the run, so should be secure, but do you think this is suitable as a stop-gap?

Hi :D

I personally would just stick with your ferret cage (providing that it is spare).

Just make sure to raise it off of the floor on bricks or pots so that air can circulate underneath the hen.

If you cannot use the cage-try emailing the Ebay seller and asking about the gaps under the tray.

£50 is a bit :shock::shock:

Anyway, I would go with the ferret cage myself :D

Sorry all - I didn't mean to ignore your replies! I don't think the ferret cage is as tall as ANH's, but the two broodies were only wee bantams anyway. I can see that you have the same type of cage that I was originally looking at, just upside down (did not think of that!).

Whilst the ferret cage was a complete success, I am still thinking about a separate broody cage - they usually fold flat, and dragging the ferret cage out of the attic everytime it is needed is going to be a nuisance. Where do you buy yours?

Thanks for all your help!
