4m x 3m Omlet pen, cube, new auto door still boxed and coop light

We've got a big hazlenut tree at the top of the garden, I've never really done anything with it.

 

It's currently covered in nuts and lots have fallen off already. Can anyone advise me on when they should be picked, shall I just pick them up off the floor? What colour are they at their nicest? Any advice gratefully received

If they've started falling they are probably ready - try a few of the fallers and see what you think - the nut should be brown, with no green.

There are absolutely millions here in the hedgerows.

I can't understand why Booths would sell them in a shrink wrap pack for £1.99. I can understand even less why anybody would buy them

I have a hedge of these and when I first moved to my house thought I had a rat problem ..turned out it was the squirrels coming to collect nuts via walking across our roof. I dont see any squirrels all year round until the nuts are ready!

 

I must stay I dont eat them but probably should try some now as we use to buy nuts to eat at christmas

I thought I'd have loads of squirrels because of the tree, but I think I've only seen 2 or 3 in the 3 years we've been here.
