arrival of new chickens successful Maisie is the dark one and amber the gingernut. It only took 15 mins to get them to bed on the first night compared to my daughters 1 hour.Amber eats and eats, I am I correct in saying when their combs get darker red they will be ready to lay. my thanks to darren for bringing them. please pass on. thank you

Yes, as they mature their combs get bigger and much brighter red, however you may find they lay before this happens - it's a good sign when they start crouching down if you approach them.

One of my new girls laid 2 days ago (aged 20 weeks) and her comb and wattle is still pretty small! Crouching is a better sign, I think . She'd been doing that for a few days.
