Fence height

Recommended Posts

If you want it safe then an enclosed run is best with a roof as Mr Foxy can scale 6ft fences no problems.

A lot of us have Omlet Netting which is 1m (maybe a little more) tall that we use to free range the chooks. A lot of us only let the chooks free range when we are there to supervise but some (including me) leave the girls out providing I am at home.

My silkie and my frizzle are rubbish at flying - good at flapping - but rubbish at flying so I am not sure fence height in relation to the chooks will matter to much if you are sticking to those breeds. Other bantams can get quite hight and think nothing of 6ft perches

The patio end of my garden is standard gate ie thigh height on me (I am 5'9"). The girls look at the gate but never think about vaulting it - it does have uncomfortable pointed bits on the top.

The actual fence has plant pots besides it that the girls like to sit on. That made the top of the fence a jump away. While they never did make that leap I have attached a trellis to the top of the fence (placing it on its side and extending the length of the fence (6ft or so). Problem solved.

The rest of the garden has fences 5-6 feet high so no problems there.
