Moulting - now being pecked :-(

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone

been a long time since i posted on here and forgot my password and had to re register

my 2 chickens are going through there first moult one more than the other (i think!)

she has 2 bald patches on her front and now my other is occassionally having a crafty peck and has now gone a little pink.

I dont want pecking to get any worse so thought i would use anti peck spray or something.

I have read that ukadex is the best will this be ok to spray straight on to her skin? and anyone know of any where in north shropshire that may sell this as i dont really want to wait for delivery.

Im going on holiday week after next and only got someone calling in every couple of days to collect eggs, top up food and water etc. and i dont want to go away worrying about them :(

Also nest box is very wet in mornings i think from the one who is moulting laying soft eggs, i have been giving them poultry spice, they have a supply oF oyster shell and grit think i might get some protein powder??? to help. would this help?

Does anyone have any ideas.

SORRY FOR LONG POST!!!!

many thanks

Welcome back  .

I can't help with the Ukadex, I'm afraid, as I've not used it but I have noticed anti-peck spray in my local chicken supplies place.

For softies, you're best giving them limestone flour (sold for tortoises, available on Ebay or pet shops). I add 1/4 a teaspoon to their afternoon corn, mixed with a little cod liver oil (helps absorption of the calcium) two or three times a week.

Thanks aint no body here :D

After a few phone calls managed to get some anti peck spray today which is also an antibacterial also got some limestone powder.

By the time i got home from work looks like there had been a bit more pecking going on, but judging by the look on dawns face when she had a crafty peck after i had sprayed stuff on i hope things will improve.

im hoping she will start laying properley again or that she will have a break from laying by next week when im on holiday as dont really want to ask the person who looking after them to have to scoop mess out of nest box :vom:

Cant remember the make of the anti peck spray but will post on here if it works and what make it is.

ok, im starting to get a bit stressed about this now,

She dosnt look any worse tonight, but after having spoken with another chicken owner they told me i should seperate them as she will keep getting pecked and will just get worse, but from what i can see she is not getting pecked all the time its just when the other one is near to her and the bald bits catch her eye!

Its got to the stage now that tonight ive been looking at chicken coops to buy to use with an old chicken run i have so that if need be i can seperate them for a while as i am going on holiday next wed and dont want to get to the stage where the day before im going need to seperate them,

Also ive only got someone coming in every couple of days to check on them, so im thinking it may be better to seperate them while im on holiday any way but then will they be ok to put back together after a couple of weeeks? i dont really want to fork out on a new chicken coop for just a temporary thing though aarrrggggghh HELP !!!!
