An exciting wait for our first egg

Recommended Posts

Well after a bad start things have settled down in Cluckingham Palace. Poor Speckeldy was returned to the breeder as she advised and replaced with Whoopi the black hybrid. Speckeldy was in danger of being pecked to death and I could not do that to her however much I wanted to keep her. Whoopi came from the same batch as the other three and I popped her in the cube after dark and they came out together in the morning as if she had always been there. Such a relief . I did not think the girls were eating that much but the amount of dropings tells me they must be having plenty. Now I can look at giving them all names, so far we have the newest addition Whoopi, Maralyn (Monrow) Blond in colour, Rula (Lenska) a redhead and I am not sure about the last one who is large with a red back and some gold around her neck area. I fancy Hazel but I dont think Hazel my frien be impressed  Today I will organise a treats bowl for teatime, I have been giving them a little mixed corn late afternoon and scattering it in the run. I hung a few cauli leaves up on a spike but they either have not found it or are not interested in it.

Now we are waiting for our first egg, the girls are 20 weeks, I am not sure when they lstart to lay? Two of the girls have redder wattles? than the other two but I am not sure if that means anything? I did not realise the problems of integrating chickens, a friend of mine read that chickens can recognise up tp 60 other birds, when I returned Speckeldy and decided to try to collect another hen to join the other 3 I was concerned that the girl I took back would be number 61 and I would not b e welcomed but thank goodness I was wrong
