pookers
Hi, Not sure if I need to worry, but I've noticed a black mark on the back of Ginger's comb. It looks like she may have caught it on something and the black is a scab. On further investigation the scab looks to have split the comb slightly. Just wondering if I should be rubbing something on it or not. Other than this she seems fine, eating well, drinking well and laying daily. She's alert and still scratching around the garden. During the day they are in a chicken wire run and I'm wondering if she's got her comb caught in this. Just wondering of anyone had any ideas or had a similar thing happen to their hens? Thanks for any replies Stu
Jools
It sounds like a scab tbh and I wouldn't worry too much. The main thing to make sure of is that none of the others start pecking her, but if it's black, then it's healing, so that's pretty unlikely now. Just keep an eye on her til it's healed completely. Ain't Nobody Here
One of my new girls had one of the points of her comb pecked off by one of my old girls . It's gone a bit black too but it doesn't seem to bother her. As long as there's no blood, it should heal OK. Just watch out for further injury or pecking by the others. CluckyBucks
If you put plain vaseline onto it, it should keep it covered and should stop it bleeding if it starts to. Also, it will moisturise the comb xx xx
