Clarabelle

Leghorn egg colour

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

Well, my two new girls are settling in ok, although my Pepperpot Clarabel is bullying my lovely little silkie :-( so she is not sleeping in the Eglu for now. I was really pleased when my new Leghorn, Eve, decided to put herself to bed with Clarabel and they seem to getting on well together - I guess their similar size helps. It has only been about two and bit weeks!

Anyway, I just wanted to ask those of you with Leghorns about the colour of eggs you get. From what I've read they should be white, but Eve's are brown and often speckled, not what I was expecting at all! Does this mean she isn't a purebreed afterall?

Eve is laying eggs around 53g at the moment, quite consistently and she is about 10 months. Will they get any bigger? Clarabel regularly weighs 80 grammers, but then she is a hybrid.

Thanks,

I bought her from a lady who hatches a few eggs out here and there and also rehabilitates ex-batts.

Eve certainly looks like a Leghorn, but the eggs are definitely brown. Oh well, the main reason I bought her is that she is very friendly indeed, although she makes a right mess in the garden with all her digging!
