We try to empty the pond daily - it always looks as if it needs emptying though :D - ducks are so mucky!!

We have a drinker with a guard over which they can use to dunk their heads but not swim - this means they have clean water at all times. Ducks can get eye infections from dirty water.

Katie Thear's 'Starting with Ducks' is a good reference book to get hold of.

Hi Debbie,

I have 2 Aylesburys that use a plastic sand pit style container as a pond. I have to change the water daily as unfortunately they do poop in it a lot!! It amazes me that I hardly ever have to change the straw in their house, they just don't poop in there for some reason, just everywhere else!!

Regards,

Rachel

PS I must learn how to upload photos myself....have just been looking at one of the other threads on how to do this. I don't even seem able to attach any smilies!!

I have to admit to only changing my ducks water every week - it is pretty gross by the end of the week... but then... it looks pretty rough about 5 minutes after refilling it to

They have a big drinker too... which was supposed to keep the water clean... they still manage to make it look a bit gross... but at least they can't swim/poo in it! That is one of the gravity fed ones, so it replaces the water as they drink it.

It depends entirely on how much water you have. If you have a washing-up tub for them to paddle in, it'll need changing very often... if you have a lake... not so often ;-)

My "pond" is 275 litres (approx. 60 gal) - and changing weekly seems fine. It would be better if I did it twice a week... but I don't have the time (it's rather a palaver, getting rid of all that water!)

Got to say the natural pond in our garden due to lack of rain looks ok but it does pong! The ducks seem happy enough & I wont be emptying that out!

Was cutting some trees today and the ducks were quacking away at me ..indie
