jam
Hi One of my ex batts hasnt layed an egg for a couple of days, im not concerned yet but after recently reading a section in practical poultry about hens becoming egg bound, ive been wondering what the symptoms are, in case future reference is needed. Also, do ex batts lay less often in the winter, or not at all? squishy - black brahma Gerty - Maran Buttercup - light sussex lou, winnie - ex batts cookie, biscuits sherbet, ginge, pickles, harry mickey
Christian
In theory, they should lay all year round - apart from when they are moulting. It does them good to have a break though. Egg bound hens tend to look quite distressed. They will often return to the nest box, but fail to get comfy and walk in and out. They can be swollen and waddle when they walk. Other symptoms include fluffed up, hunched and miserable looking, withdrawn, head in, sleepy and unhappy. Sometimes they have mucky knicker feathers where the egg is preventing the faeces being passed properly. If she is eating and drinking ok, then I wouldn't worry about her too much.
