Why do you keep chickens?

Recommended Posts

I've always wanted chickens and then a friend at work rescued some ex-batts so that gave me the nudge to get some rescues myself, they are definately spoilt pets with eggs as a nice bonus. Seems to have caused a chain reaction as several friends have now got rescues! Chickens are sooooo adorable and addictive! Hoping to get a couple more very soon, just waiting for a phone call........... :D

We bought our 10 chickens in Sep, being newly retired we felt we could make the commitment. They are now 16-18 weeks old and they control our daily routine. 9 different breeds, they are best described as a bunch of marauding juveniles making combined raids on food stations, the latest hole that one has dug, "helping" wiith the coop cleaning etc. There is always one on watch for a human bearing gifts coming up the garden path. Not sure that they will ever have time to lay eggs!

We realised how attached to them we were when some got gape worm and gave us sleepless nights. My husband likes to handle them whilst I am happy to be amongst them and feed them by hand but don't see them as cuddly. They give us hours of pleasure so they are definitely pets - eggs, well they will just be a bonus.

I like to refer to my girls as "Productive Pets", they are pets but I love the egg production

I spoil my girls rotten, but they give as much love back as they get :D

'Productive Pets' is what I'd call mine, too. Mine don't have names, but I am fond of them just the same. :D
