Been to my knitting group

Recommended Posts

I mentioned earlier in the week that I was thinking of going a knitting group. A local one has just started up & I went today. It was really good & I really enjoyed it. I got shown how to use my pom pom woll that I nearly threw across the room the other week.

It's not hard at all now I've been shown & is knitting up into a lovely textured 'pom pom' scarf. I'm being shown how to do socks next week on 4 Double pointed needles. :anxious:

There were lots of lovely patterns in the ladies magazines & books. A most gorgeous whacky tea cozy. I think I'd like to knit a cardi next though. If not, it will be another of my whacky novelty knits. ha ha. Probably an Alan dart gnome or a sheep. :D

I'm even going to join the WI - with 2 of the ladies & they are already thinking of some trips out together.

I was already a big knitter - but now I will never be able to put my needles down!

As you cast on - use the thread between each pom pom to make the stitches. Hold each pom pom out of the way as you do so & work round them. You should get 6 lots of 2 stitches together = 12stitches. Then hold pom pom, knit 2, hold pom pom, knit 2 etc.

The secret is to pinch the pom poms between your fingers, so they don't get trapped in the stiches. Once you have done about 5 rows, it starts to look right.

I'll post a piccy of progress so far tomorrow if you like.

Let us know how you get on.

I have seriously been thinking of going along to our local WI for some time now to spec it out but I have really been strapped for time, and probably will be for a while. (family stuff).

I think they meet in the daytime which would suit me better than evenings

Been again this afternoon. Pompom scarf nearly done. Socks next!

I'm being challenged to knit a Carmen Miranda tea cosy! Oh crumbs! :anxious:

It's very flamboyant with fruits on the top & lots of feathers sticking out! I will have to ask my cockerels politely to donate some tail feathers from their moults!

I have a lovely time knitting, chatting, giggling & drinking coffee.

One lady is knitting a complicated mohair cardi. Another lady is knitting a lacy shrug, another is doing a self patterning fairisle jumper (very clever) & another lady is knitting the most lovely father Xmas.

I'm even going my 1st WI get together next week with my new friends. :D

I think I best start a crafty blog!

I shall post pics tomorrow of my pom pom scarf & my work in progress. My latest project is a loopy scarf knit with Katia mystery wool. It's thick & thin wool & uses the thick bits to form loops, then the thin bits to knit the stitches. It looks like a ladder. 8)

Our group leader took a photo of us all together today, with a ladies knitted Santa infront of us. So we may soon be in a knitting magazine! :anxious:

I love going my group & the coffee at the venue is a real good cuppa! :D

We yatter loads, it's a wonder we get any knitting done.

I have been doing my pom pom scarf too - the first knitting i have done since i was a child....

Eventually I managed to cast on. My muum was most impressed with me when she had to do it for a friend of hers and realised it was not straight forward.

Its nearly finished now but I have no idea how to cast it off...... I know how to do normal casting off but not looking forward to this one... any tips??

Wonder if there are any knitting groups round near me??

Ok - you know how you cast on - doing 2 stitches between each pom pom & pinching the pom poms out of the way. You do similar casting off. Knit one, knit the other...pass the 1st stitch over the second & dropp of the needle (one stitch cast off). Then pinch pom pom out of the way & do the same again.

Hope this helps. Only use the yarn for 2 stitches between each pom pom.No more.

Good luck

I managed it!!

I used the rico and had a single stitch at either end and then pairs of stitches between the bobbles. Meant I had six pom poms either side and none covering the edges...

Oh I am so proud of it. I just have the ends to thread in. Think i will trim the pom poms off to thread it in.

Off to the wool shop on saturday morning to find something else to make. I wonder if i can find a nice simple baby jumper? Want something beyond cast on, knit and cast off but not something too scarey.

A friend is due to give birth on christmas day.....

rounds instead of rows - you go round & round.

I'll give it a whirl & let you know how I get on. I'm a knit, purl, increase, decrease girl. Only just learnt how to make 1 & slip knit pass slipped stitch over! I can't do cable yet. That will be the next challenge. I won't be beaten by anyting crafty! ha ha.

I started with scarves, then bags, then toys. Now I just go for it & hope for the best!

ah yes that makes sense.....

am waiting for a kniting book to arrive from amazon so that i won't be daunted. If i get to something i dont understand I can just look it up - or thats the plan.

WIth knitting my aim is to get to those beautiful feathery light wraps...... proper clothes come later as i have to adapt a pattern for those as i am tall and long armed. Leave that side of things to my mum for the moment.

There is a new wool and patchwork shop near me and i have just signed up for a learn to crochet course that is on in february. I saw a gorgeous pattern for a one piece cardigan on earthfaire which i have ordered. Quite beyond me at the moment but I want to learn enough so i can make it!!

and in between all this i will be carrying on with my bead work.... and chickens.... and cats......
