Has anyone been to the Lewes Bonfires? UPDATED: PICS

Recommended Posts

OH and me are thinking of going. We know they don't like foreigners going but it's one of those things that looks like it needs doing with the burning barrels and torches and parades and everything. :D

Has anyone been? Is it good? Is it a nightmare to get to on a train? Does anyone know how some of the ticketing works? The websites aren't that informative on how you get to go to the different bonfires.

OMG I NEVER want to go there again!

I'm not keen on fireworks and I@d never heard of this before the band got asked to play there. Picture the parade, including us - A KIDS BAND marching through the streets accompanied by some NUTTERS holding lit torches. Why do I call them nutters? Well they DON'T MIND that people throw fireworks at them! We were assured none would be thrown at us but it scared us all anyway. At the end when the burn the effigy these guys stood on scaffolding and had fireworks thrown at them "our" guy said it was ok, only a couple of burns on his arms.

We never went back - bandmaster was told in no uncertain terms he would be on his own as none of the kids wanted to do it again.

I grew up in Sussex and went to Lewes a fair few times. Going back about 15 years probably since I last went.

Cliffe was the biggest and roughest then, some of the others were more controlled.

It did used to be quite scary though. but spectacular if you watch the parades.

If you`re catching the train though, why not go to Battle instead. It`s on one site in front of the abbey. There`s parades and the guy is usually amazing. Saddam Hussein, and Nigel Mansell were guys that I can remember. Battle always seemed to have a friendlier atmosphere than Lewes.

Mind you take ear plugs if you go to Battle. The fireworks are in the square in front of the abbey and the noise of them echoes around the buildings.

Hope you have a lovely time wherever you go. :D

My brother has been a few times as his girlfriend is from Lewes.

He says it is fab. Yes its loud and not a relaxed evening but says its the best bonfire night he's ever been to.

I've never been so I can't vouch for it.

Either way, hope you enjoy it if you do go.

Oh my gosh amazing amazing amazing! Yes, rowdy as you like, yes Cliffe are the hardcore Society, but WHAT a spectacle! A well-to-do steeped-in-history town let absolutely loose for the night, and fire! Fire! Everywhere! Hundreds of torches blazing up the hill, swarms of immaculately fancy-dressed parades bearing burning crosses and torches (it's a historical thing not a hatred thing) and barrels - spectacular!:clap:

And they do let off fireworks in the street, as part of the parades, but not into the crowds. Bangers. So far safer than some of the proper organised traditional big park displays I've been to where feral yoof let off rockets in the crowd sometimes aimed at toddlers. The Lewes bangers are extremely loud, but don't travel, so they are safe. And there was a huge police presence.

Amazing. Absolutely no place for children in my book. I can see what you mean Pengy. It would terrify the average under-teen. Unless they've been dyed in the wool with it, or have an extremely strong backbone. But wow!!! :D

So lovely to know health and safety pedants can't get at things like this, and if everyone respects the rules and the fire - wow.

Anyone who is a bit of a biker or rock chick or carnage hunter would LOVE it! :)
