Tutti Frutti
Sorry, TMI before LOL! Does anyone know if a cat's scenting is it a fox deterrent? My tomcat marks his territory (even though he's been done ) and our epileptic is having trouble covering up her business so I remove it for her! It's by the WIR - she's always used that end of the garden, even before we got the chooks so it's not her telling them it's her territory I've heard about man-wee... but cat wee? Not heard of that one! We haven't actually SEEN any foxes around here recently and we've had the girls for nearly 3 months now without any evidence of them in our garden either. We're enclosed by 6ft fences all round, but I know they can scale them. We live near the woods and have seen a few in local streets and 3 in one day as roadkill and, many moons ago, one even had my OH off his push bike on the cycle path - he said it was the shock We don't want to become complacent and we're doubling up on the wire on the WIR with chainlink fencing tomorrow (too dark when we got home today). Better safe than sorry but I can't help worrying. A neighbour's binbag was torn open on Friday and my first thought was "FOX!!!"!
TAJ
A determined fox will get through - I have two cats that mark their terratory - I still had a fox visit. Tracy
sandyhas3chucks
won't make a flying figs difference to a fox! sorry, wish it were that easy. man pee won't worry them either, ever watched spring or autumn watch?
Tutti Frutti
Thank you ladies. So I take it there isn't a really effective deterrent - prevention is the only way forward? What about a motion sensitive light? Will that scare them off - or just give them a better view for their attach???

Carol U
I think man pee certainly helps - we tried it before we even had chickens to stop the foxes pooing round our pond and it stopped. Even better is Foxwatch - they no longer come near the run at night since we had one. However, I wouldn't trust anything 100% - especially in winter when the foxes are hungry. I built mine a large w.i.r. and only let them out when I'm around and can keep an eye on them. I think that's your only safe bet.
beulah59
Cats don't deter foxes .... our cat used to sit on the patio with the local fox drinking from the paddling pool together ...

Have to agree with you there, "Trust in God, but tie up your camel". Old Arab saying.....
