Janepie33
Does anyone know if it is possible to take your car to the Scilly Isles? I have looked at a couple of websites and they only seem to show that you can get there by air or passenger ferry. smanners
I think may be only St Mary has cars! I went years and years ago when I was 5 or 6 years old and stayed on St Martin and St Agnes. I'm pretty sure there were no cars then. We flew from Penzance by helicopter to main island ( St Mary) and then sailed to other islands from there. It was very peaceful and lovely as I remember with not much to do but walk and relax. Hope you enjoy your trip
WarrensWorld
You can take your car to the Isles of Scilly, but I don't think the islanders want you to. I should think the cost would be a wee bit expensive. There's only one road on St Marys, which is basically a figure of eight with a couple of loops off it. There are or were cars on some ot the other islands, Mac Mace on Bryher had a Land Rover which was only held together by the strands on rust. It's a lovely place to visit but it's not cheap. We went there when there was a 40 year tide (lowest and highest ever), the school kids walked from Tresco to Bryher, and the water only came up to their waist! and that night having dinner in the Atlantic hotel the boats were floating level with floor, and looked like they were about to come through the windows. We were going to live there, recieved a letter from the Duchy of Cornwall saying we could lease a house on St Martins, (best beach in England). Problem was it cost £40,000 for just 15 years!!!! two bedrooms and no bathroom!!. It only cost £40,000 at that time to buy a three bedroom semi on the posh side of Bexley. You mustn't call them The Scilly Isles, it's The Isles of Scilly. edit:- bit of a rambling post.
Janepie33
Thanks for the info. Just remembered, the Scilly Isles are a set of roundabouts near Esher!
Old Speckled Hen
Thanks for the info. Just remembered, the Scilly Isles are a set of roundabouts near Esher! When I lived down that way I thought they were the Silly Isles because they were just such a ridiculous configuration ....no kidding I feel really silly now
Chickendoodle
The Countryfile programme on BBC1 was from there on Sunday. I think they said that you can't take your car.(or maybe you are just actively discouraged) Might be worth watching it on iplayer anyway if you are going there. poachedegg
I saw it on Countryfile too and sure the wording was discouraged - looked a lovely place.
