mikk100
Today and yesterday I found an egg on the run floor. The birds are in an eglu cube within a walk in run but often they are left out during the day. The eggs have been found right in the middle of the run, not in any sort of nest at all. I have had the birds (ex batts) since August and they have always laid in the nest (apart from the initial couple weeks). What might have caused this...and are the eggs ok to eat? I wonder this because i've heard that sometimes the hen knows if there is a problem with the egg and will lay outside the nest. Does anyone think there is a problem with the nest? Chook n Boo Mum
If the nest box is clean, with clean dry bedding & no sign of bugs & creatures I'd have thought it was ok......as they had been laying in the proper place before this week, perhaps a couple of golf balls may remind them to lay in the NB rather than the run............have the girls got access to the house at all times? Perhaps they've been "caught short"...could you put a small cat basket for example in the run as an interim nest box, at least it would be cleaner than the run & the eggs are less likely to be trampled on I don't know about the "problem egg" theory either Sorry not much help really, more early morning ramblings........... Space Chick
One of my ex batts does this, she lays in the cube nesting box most of the time, but then for no reason decides she wants me to play a game of hide and seek and will lay in the run or in the garden I have always eaten the eggs, and they have been fine. sjp
it's probably down to how they've layed in the cage don't they just lay where they stand and the eggs rollaway
