Wantchooks
Now I have got my head round brown hens, does anyone know of a poultry supplier in Kent that they can personally recommend? I would be looking for something docile and easy to handle for a newbie so maybe a lt sussex/rhode is red hybrid or a purebreed of similar temperament. Am aware of henhousepoultry and have contacted them, but wonder if there are any others. Thanks
quickcluck
I'd always go for Ben here http://www.henhousepoultry.co.uk/ His birds are great, he's is super and really helpful!!
Margaret
All my Girles come from Mumbles Farm in Borough Green. Gill ( Scarey farmers wife!!) can be a little abrupt until you get to know her but Hens are lovely and she really know her stuff. + WIR Lavender Mable Posh Marjorie Violet
Wantchooks
Thanks both. Any particular breeds or would you recommend I stick with the little brown hen hybrid?
quickcluck
Any breeds are good, although anything pure white in the hybrid departments tends to be a tad flighty! My faves are an amber, speckledy, bluebelle any my columbine
Wantchooks
Too many ideas! Still at the planning stage. Hubby threw a wobbler last week- but slowly getting him interested
quickcluck
Slowly, slowly..... he will come round. Are you near enough to go and visit a breeder?
Wantchooks
Yes to visit both the above suggestions. Did go on a chook course at Forsham arks who have quoted me for a wooden hen house and run. Their birds looked good but as the price quoted comes in about the same as a new cube......I think I have set my heart on a cube, so feel it might be a cheek to only buy their hens. Storm
Hi I got two hybrid chickens for my friend from Churchmans Farm in Faversham in october they are doing really well and laying eggs and are a beautiful blue colour. I am getting a Boughton chicken coop with extension run from Forsham Arks and its being delivered on friday so I am very excited!
Woodcat
hey I can second the churchmans farm rec i got my hybrids from there and they were good. They were very helpful to me as a beginer and the birds were very healthy and happy. Beth
BeckyBoo
Hi there, if you want eggs get at least one hybrid, which is the basic little brown hen although you do get other colours too. She will lay you eggs through the winter as well as summer, pure breeds are often prettier but will pack up from about October/November through til March. So depending on how many you're getting I'd definintely make sure at least one or two are hybrids - they're fairly robust docile birds too. As said, anything white seems flighty IMO, but really after that it's just a question of what takes your fancy Happy choosing! Wantchooks
Thanks everyone! Storm - the Boughton ark was brilliant, but I have a lower back problem and an elderly Mum, and the angle that you have to stand to lift off the heavy side panel would have done us no good whatsoever! BeckyBoo - are there any problems in mixing one type of chook with another?
