Food to eat

Recommended Posts

I tend to stick to the obvious things like fruit and veg. Mine only get bread when I need them to go back in the run quickly or I'm trying to get an escapee back in the run. I'm sure I read somewhere that too much bread can cause crop problems but I may well be wrong. As for christmas pud I hadn't thought about it, does contain a lot of sugar though. OH wouldn't let me anyway we'll still be eating it in March and they will keep till next year.

Avocados and uncooked potato of any sort are definitely out as they contain toxins which are highly poisonous to birds. I would personally add any poultry products to the banned list.

Apart from that, pretty much anything goes, as long as it doesn't contain more than traces of salt, sugar or fat.

Ours found the stub of a stale loaf on the compost heap this morning and ate/fought over that along with some cat sick that I hadn't spotted until it was too late :vom: I think they spent so much time fighting over the bits of bread that they didn't notice the starlings making off with it LOL!

I don't actually feed them this stuff, they just dig it up out of the heap. However I was wondering about a bit of Christmas Pud as well - they love raisins. Only a little bit as a treat after they've been FR during the day. It is home made from fruit and apart from the natural sugar in the fruit, has none added. It has a tiny bit of brandy in it, but I should think that has all evaporated by now.

The impression I get from this forum is that chickens can eat pretty much anything except for the things already mentioned, but that it is best to give them predominantly "normal" chicken food (pellets, corn) and keep the "treats" as treats and give them the treats later in the day so they can fill up on nutritious stuff first.
