Worried about freezing water!

Recommended Posts

Belated Happy New Year Every One,

We have to go away on Thursday for 5 nights.

We have an Eglu with 4 chickens and 2 Glugs which I have been filling with warm water each morning since the freeze started. I am worried that while I'm away although the water will be filled each morning by a friend it won't get checked again during the day. If it did start to freeze over in the afternoon would the girls have had enough water? What can I do to stop it freezing?

Any advice would be gratefully received!

Hi, Scrambledhead,

If you have a 'Glug', you could put a couple of ping pong balls in the water. This leaves a hole that your girls will be able to drink from. However, if you have a 'Super Glug' like myself, you would have to get a friend to keep an eye on it for you. Maybe treat them to some of your eggs os a thank you.

Hope that helps

you could try and rig up something inside the eglu.

I left my chooks with an icecream container weighted down with an old cd shelf .... as well as the glug outside

When I got back from 2 nights it had one poo in it .. but the water had not been upturned and I am sure they would have drunk it if they were thirsty !
