Knitting Squares For Charity

Recommended Posts

I found out how many squares they need for each blanket

3 x 4 (12) cot blanket (new borns)

6 x 4 (24) smallest (babies to about 3 yrs)

7 x 5 (35) medium (4 – 7 yrs)

8 x 5 (40) large (8 – 15 yrs)

if we start on a newborn blanket, we only need 12 squares :D:D

they want to make 5000 blankets, so they need 137,500 squares!

good grief - this was for last year, I assume they are still collecting :D

Shall we start with a newborn then? If 12 of us say that we will do a 3 x 4 and then if there are more of us we could go onto another or a larger one - the only thing is that I wonder how many large ones they manage to get, what about thinking big and going for a slightly larger one?

Updated - I have posted a message on their forum asking which size they are in most need of.

Ok, have had a response from the very friendly forum http://forum.knit-a-square.com/group/uk/forum/topics/newbie-questions

Basically they need 8" x 8" squares. Any in acrylic fibre needs to be labelled as acrylic as they can be dangerous for children who may be close to fires.

I will put the patterns below but any funky designs within the size of 8" x 8" will be appreciated by the children. There is a photo page here: http://forum.knit-a-square.com/photo where you can post piccies of squares that you may make.

Basic Knitting Pattern

FOR ONE 8"/20 cm SQUARE, you will need:

Yarn from a 100 gram (3.5 oz) ball of yarn or s"Ooops, word censored!"s of yarn or wool

8 ply (Aus), worsted (USA), double knit (UK)

Size 6mm needles (Aus)

4 (UK, Canada) 10 (USA) - I had to use 5mm needles as mine came out too small with size 4

A yarn sewing needle.

1. Cast on 32 stitches (try to make your stitches neither too loose nor too tight to help ensure uniform squares) - I had to use 40 stitiches to get a 8" x 8" square

2. Row 1: knit

3. Row 2: knit. These two rows form the 'garter' stitch knitting pattern for your square

4. Continue knitting as per these two rows until you have knitted a square

5. To ensure you square is 8"/20cm either use a tape measure or form a triangle by folding one corner of your square over to meet the opposite corner as shown - if all sides are equal - then you have a square!

6. Cast off

7. Use your yarn sewing needle to sew in all the yarn ends using a darning method

VERY IMPORTANT

Leave a one metre (one and a quarter yards) length of your yarn attached to your work after you have cast off. This will be used to join the squares together.

(more advanced patterns can be found here: http://forum.knit-a-square.com/forum/categories/patterns-squares/listForCategory

For Crotchet Squares

Yarn: Worsted weight #4

Hook Size: J/10 6.00mm

Gauge: 11.5 sts x 5.5 rows = 4"

Abbreviations: Ch(s)-chain(s), dc-double crochet, rep-repeat

Crochet instructions

Row 1. Ch 24, dc in 3rd ch from hook & each ch to end (23 sts including chs), turn.

Row 2. Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc here and throughout), dc in each dc across, turn.

Rep last row 11 times. Finish off, leave 2 yard (2 metre) tail for sewing up.

Regarding Postage

Instructions can be found here: http://www.knit-a-square.com/postal.html. It may be as cheap to send 3 as it is to send one.....

OR

I am happy to send a box load off if people want to post them to me but I would need a small donation to help cover the cost.

If anyone want more info the website is: http://www.knit-a-square.com/index.html

You odd bits of wool could help keep an AIDS orphan warm :D

The pattern is very easy, how about getting your children involved - a great introduction to knitting without making the obligatory scarf

ive finished my first one :dance::dance:

ive used acrylic wool which is seriously multicoloured :lol:

I started off with a metre long tail - and kept getting tangled up in it - so I knotted it into a loopy knot - it was a lot easier :D

just started my 2nd :D:D

(feeling rather proud of myself :angel: )
