Work/Training Advice

Recommended Posts

I moved to Wales just over two years ago for a lifestyle change, (intending to make my hobby of developing properties into an small income). This worked well for the 18 months but obviously with the market as it is I have had to put this on hold for a while and look for a real job.

The problem is my background is electronics engineering and there is just not that type of job available in this area. The only real jobs in this area are retail or Nursing/caring. I really don't fancy retail but wouldn't mind having ago at the other.

Does anyone know what are the very basic qualifications you need to enter into this area and how I go about finding the info or is it possible to get a job without the qualifications and do on job training. Any info will be helpful.

In 1999 hubby decided in his wisdom (while we were applying for a mortgage  ) to go in to healthcare

He has no real qualifications, about 5 GCSEs I think

He applied for a job as a HCA (Healthcare assistant)/Nurses Aide/Nursing Assistant (the title keeps changing!) in a hospital and got it ok so there must be a low entry threshold (with all due respect to hubby :anxious: )

He has had a lot of training and has worked up through the ranks since then

The option of home carer was never considered mainly because he doesnt drive but also because its quite a lonley job and the number of calls you have to get through in one day is often high, he is also worried about the implications of being accused of mistreatment in an environment where there arent any other people around to witness what happened

He worked in retail previous to that and absolutely hated it, he says mopping up sick and emptying bedpans is far preferable!

After my Mum died, my Dad decided to quit his long term career in Accountancy and work as a carer. He got a job working with adults with learning difficulties and loved it, although it was a labour of love, long hours for poor pay. He didn't have any formal caring qualifications. He has since passed away him self, but he loved his job and certain was more rewarding than accounts  .

Good luck :D
