sadietoo
Yesterday I took advantage of the lovely weather to give my girls a spring clean, and when I put the bits back in the run I had a little rearrange of the furniture. I'd left the broody cage in the run because they liked to sit on top of it, but so that it would go on the other side of the run, (with the door open and carribinered to the side of the run) I put it back in upside down. This morning before I went out to work I was absolutely dismayed to see that Pansy was laying down flattened in the run, having jumped down from the top of the cage and left her foot behind on the top!! ..I brought her indoors and checked her over, and gave her many grapes to apologise, and thankfully she was absolutely fine and no damage done...(but I dread to think what might have happened if I hadn't seen it)...needless to say the cage has been removed from the run and will not be making a reappearance until it has a suitable wooden top that cannot catch a chicken toe-nail !!! ...I feel rather foolish now for not realising the potential danger too...still at least it's a lesson learnt with no lasting damage done!! suebee
Glad to hear she's ok. Great idea to post about it too. It's a good thing for any of us to be reminded to be on our guard in the interests of chook health and safety. Sometimes it's apparently innocent things that can be overlooked. When I first had my girls, I put their perches too high. They loved them up there, but the poor dears had a heck of a job getting down, even with an interim perch between. It was some time later before I realised they were struggling, and promptly lowered them, much to their relief!
Redwing
My cockerel did the same, jumped down from a cage within his run and twisted his leg in the bars, we thought he had broken his leg for sure but after a couple of weeks of rest he was fine Good job your hen seemed no more than cheesed off from it Its hard to spot the dangers sometimes - just one of those things
