chickchickmylovely
Hi Can someone desperately help me with one of my Pekin Bantams girls. I noticed that she started to develop a scale on her ‘face’ around her eyes and beak. I have separated her from the other birds- who all seem fine. The coup is well scrubbed and is treated regularly for pests. Have checked and powdered the birds thoroughly with no sign of any form of infestation. Legs are nice and clear. No blood spots on birds or sign of infestations. Everyone’s eyes are bright! Used a proprietary agent for caged birds on the ‘face’ scale and continue to dust. Birds have also been bathed and dried carefully Now the bad bit- this particular bird seems to have lost her balance- she started arching her neck backwards and ‘rubbing in a side to side motion’ which gave me the impression that it was irritating. Although again nothing found so just kept powdering her with tick / mite dust. Her feathers are plump and look fine- as does the birds shape I’ve now brought her indoors and she’s in her own cage. She’s still throwing her head back and basically getting upset on occasion with lots of flapping to re right herself. Last Saturday morning I came down and I found her on her back although after turning again she seemed O.K feed and drank When she drinks she lifts her head and from time to time throws her head back- leading to a loss of balance and flapping. She stands from time to time and walks timidly around although most of the time she seems better positioned in a sitting position and in a corner. Her droppings are solid and the right colour although yesterday for a short time we had a few runny green droppings Can anyone please help me please on this. I’ve contacted a number of vets and ‘professionals’ from various animal feed farm stores who beyond the standard tick and mite ailments cant shed light on this. The bird has now been indoors since this started happening last Friday afternoon- so some four plus days now. Her welfare is paramount – I don’t want her to suffer. Can anyone help with this please
chelsea
Sorry to hear she is poorly and you've done the right thing seperating her. You have mentioned you have rung the vets, but have you actually taken her for an examination? I think as she has had it a few days it's best to pop her to the vets so they can see her, sometimes something as simple as an ear infection could cause loss of balance but also it could be something more serious that requires antibiotics. Let us know how she gets on.
Redwing
I agree with Chelsea it could be some sort of infection which would explain the crust on the face if it was around the ears Favus is could be worth googling but that doesnrt explain the problems with balance/movement etc.. Regardless do get her to a vet who will probably prescribe some antibiotics
