stellabystarlight
Hiya we have had a couple of soft shelled eggs, all the girls look happy and healthy and have plenty of layers pellets and oyster shell. Three of them have just come back into lay after thier first moult and think it is one of them that is laying the eggs. I was wondering if its ok to eat these eggs? The eggs are still whole but feel soft like a balloon. We had one yesterday and one this morning. Many thanks inadvance, Stella
Olly
I wouldn't recommend it. Without a hard shell, the contents of the egg could be contaminated. They are quite common when hens are young or coming back into lay after a moult - or when they're getting on a bit - so it's quite likely they'll revert to the usual hard shells after a few of these. If not, you could try adding limestone flour to their feed, it boosts their calcium levels.
grracee
My orp has recently come into her first ever lay and i have quite often found her laying soft shelled eggs like you've have described. I used to get one every other day from her (hard shelled one day then soft the next) so I knew the osyter grit helps with the shells but i also read on the 'net somewhere that mealworms are also good for them. So off i popped to the local pet store and brought some dried mealworms, dont know whether its a coincidence or not but since then i have only had one soft shelled egg and thats over about 1 - 2 weeks or so plus they just love mealworms! dancing cloud
I have eaten soft-shelled eggs and lived to tell the tale It seems such a shame to waste them and I have always eaten them on the day the were laid, never tried storing them. Chucky Mama
I wouldn't recommend it. Without a hard shell, the contents of the egg could be contaminated. I was thinking the same. I don't fancy it myself Might cook it and give it to the dog though.
