Chucky1
I love the way the chooks will run towards us when we venture up the field. I know that they want treats, or food. I love the way they gather around when we dig or have machines working. Or if I am in the workshop drilling and sawing, how they walk under my feet picking at the sawdust. But I do wonder if it is always purely self interest working on their behalf, because even after the time for delivery of any treat has long past, they are still closeby, pecking and bokking and ... I'm intrigued to hear what anyone else thinks. I think they genuinely like our company

chelsea
I think it's a bit of both really. My girls love it when we are out working in the garden - they are much more active and around our feet. When we come inside they sit by the back gate by the kitchen door and don't move for ages - so I think they do miss human company.
chick wiggle
I think they do genuinely enjoy our company as much as we enjoy theirs. They will still come and say hello and stay around long after the treats have all gone. And a couple will stay sat on my lap having a cuddle for absolutely ages with no treats in sight at all. docsquid
I think they like company, and they like interesting things going on. It isn't just about food, although a lot of it is. Yesterday they "helped" us put the contents of one compost heap into the trailer to transport to our wildlife site and thoroughly enjoyed just digging, watching us dig and generally getting in the way. Shame it snowed so much overnight that we daren't risk a trip out with the trailer at the moment, so we're stuck at home!
Chucky1
Thanks everyone for coming back and confirming that they kind of love us too. It's always nice to know that you're not mad or at least if you are, that you're in good company. Thanks again.
