speckled hen
Hi everyone We have decided to get another cockerel, hopefully encouraging my girls to stay near to home and not across the street with the neighbours boy!!! We haven't got one yet but are waiting to hear back from someone with a lemon pekin. We have 8 girls who are very settled and happy together, we did have colin the cockerel so they used to have boy company, so hoping another one will be ok (took ages for them to settle when colin died). Do I need to keep him separate for a while? Is it the same as any other intro, slow slow slow or do boys just go in and hope for the best????? Many Thanks in advance
craftyhunnypie
I've normally hatched mine, so they have gone in with a ' lady friend'. All apart from Spongebob that is - who I just put in with the girls. I had no problems. My sister has also always, just put the cockerel in with the girls no problem. It definitely sorts th girls out as regards them roaming. I wouldn't be without my cockerels - I love them to bits. Emma.x
speckled hen
Thanks so much for that, I am really hoping that a boy will stop the wondering as one of them will get squashed on the road before long. Just need to find a suitable boy now x
tom123
Unless the boy isn't mature or at least over 25 weeks, I just pop them in with them and they have been fine. If the boy is younger then keep him separate until he can hold is own Just a question though, are you thinking of getting a Pekin cockerel? If your ladies are all LF then I would suggest a LF boy as the Pekin could be picked on.
Redwing
keep him separate for at least a week to ensure he hasnt bought anything nasty in with him then just pop him in, the girls will knock him in to shape! (joke...it will be fine but it will take a while for them to respect him)
speckled hen
Tom - Thanks for the tip, I hadn't considered that. I spoke to the lady who has the pekin and she also has an araucana looking for a home so we are getting him Our new boy arrives tomorrow night, watch out girls
tom123
Ooo, Araucana boys They're lovely, very handsome. If you pop any of your hens eggs in the incy when you know he has been doing the business then the resulting offspring will lay coloured eggs from pale blue through to olive green
