Just had a phone call from the lovely people at Omlet and instead of coming 16th March they are coming day after tomorrow!!!!!

 

Can I please call upon you guys to maybe give me some last minute tips for any essentials other than food and bedding to help the little feathered ones settle in????

 

All in a wonderfully excited Tizz now

 

Not gonna tell the kids, going to leave it as a surprise!!!!

Relax and enjoy your chucks. You have covered the the four biggies:

Water

Shelter

Protection from preditors

 

The rest will come as you get into it:

 

Worming

Grit - for digestion and egg shell quality

Dust bath

Red Mite & Lice protection.

How exciting. Camera and deckchair for chicken-watching?

 

You could get a few treats - grapes, sweetcorn etc - but you may find they are not used to such exotic foods and won't be interested, also I'd avoid giving too many treats in the first few days, as their tummies may be unsettled by the change of location and so on.

 

Rubber gloves, a scrubbing-brush for cleaning ... have you thought about where you're going to put the poop, i.e. compost bin, green recycling bin?

 

Chucky1 is just about right - you've covered the main things, the rest will come in time. Bet you can't wait - I don't know how you are managing not to tell the children, they are going to be over the moon tomorrow!

What a lovely surprise . I agree with the above, as long as you have food, water, accommodation and shelter, they won't need anything else for a while .

Rubber gloves for poo picking (there is a lot of poo!)

Camera

Thermos

Deckchair

A warm coat

(You will be spending a ridiculous amount of time outside watching them! )

 

Everything else you can worry about as you go along. This will be when you realise how expensive chickens can get!

 

Lice and mite powder

Lice and mite spray

Wormer

Tonics

Purple spray

Plastic sheeting/tarpaulins to cover the run

Wood chips/aubiose/hemcore to put in your run when the grass has been trashed

Special crocks/skelters to store your eggs on

Netting for the garden

Snugglesafe to keep them warm on cold nights

Trugs to make them a dustbath

Shoe racks to make them a perch

A walk in run when you decide to expand your flock
