Julianna
Help! My Omlet Miss Pepperpot hybrid, Olga, has been broody and not laying for the last 6 weeks, and shows no sign of giving up. We have never left eggs from the other hens (3)under her, and we shut her out of the next box whenever we are here. When she is shut out she happily entertains herself around the garden for hours, but as soon as the door to the Eglu is opened she's straight back on the nest. I thought hybrids didn't make good sitters, but she is obviously the exception! I have read about dipping her in water to cool her down, but while the weather is still so cold I really don't want to do this. Do I just have to sit this out with her, or could I being doing something else?
Ain't Nobody Here
I used a wire pet crate raised up on bricks. It worked within 2 days. It seems cruel but they lose condition if allowed to stay broody for too long so it's cruel to be kind, really. I put her in the shed at night when I had the eglu run but in a cube run she'd probably be fine. I'd maybe put a towel or something over it though especially at this time of year. There's more info about dealing with broodies here.
Seagazer
Julianna, my Miss Pepperpot goes broody at the drop of a hat and although its not nice you do have to do what ANH suggests. Mine would carry on and on otherwise. Neither of my Gingernuts have ever gone broody. Give the broody box a go, it worked with Butch whereas the dipping never did. Good luck
Julianna
Thank you SO much! I went out to Pets At Home last weekend to buy a suitable wire cage, bundled Olga into it, and 2 days later she'd fortgotten all about being broody! A miracle cure! It was difficult to see her in it as it seemed so cruel, but her fellow girls kept her company and were fascinated by it all. She hasn't laid an egg yet but I'm not concerned about that - just happy to see her back to her old self. Next time I'll know to put her in it straight away and snap her out of it. I'm a happy hen mum again!
