Leicester_H
I've searched but can't find it - so please forgive this repeat(probably) question. One of my chickens is pulling feathers from the others (its not too bad (yet)) - can only think its boredom. A friend at work said she gives her chickens half an uncooked swede - as this keeps them busy for ages. I thought I'd read that they shouldn't have uncooked root veg - but I can't find that info anywhere ? So are uncooked swedes OK ? What about other uncooked root veg ? Is it just potato that is bad/poisonous ? Thanks as always, H
Cooks
I can find this list HERE!! but it doesn't mention swede or any other root vegetables other than potatoes, maybe we can add to it. wooohooo I did a linkyy!
Falkor
My lot won`t touch uncooked swede......probably cos they think it is an alien that has been beemed into their run to kill them but cooked up swede which has been mashed up....they will have your arm off I believe it it just potatoes that are the bad 'uns uncooked. Have you tried them on squashes? Last October we had many a pumpkin consumed Takes them a day to hollow it out so all I am left with is the skin shell Oh and buttnernut squash raw is another hit at Chez Palmer07 but I have to be in a really good mood to give it to them as I LOVE it too! Laura & CTB
Mine luurrrrve swede. I put 1/2 one in their run in the morning every couple of weeks and when I get back from work all that's left is the skin!

Olly
As far as I know it's just potatoes that you should cook. Try a broccoli stalk (I get mine off a friend with an allotment) as it keeps them busy shredding it; or a whole white cabbage, or indeed anything that will take them a while to get through. You could also try hanging stuff up, as that keeps them busy - one of those wire cages that you put suet in for birds is ideal, stuff it with greens and hang it from the run so they have to reach for it, that will keep them occupied. Leicester_H
Thanks all. Raw swede was a big hit when I got home yesterday. White cabbage has been purchased ! According to this site http://poultrypeople.webs.com/usefulessentials.htm they shouldn't have parsnip ?
