Cost of running laptops / printers / fax machines / lights

Recommended Posts

There is a possibility that my company will want me to work from home. As an exercise my boss has asked me to work out the running costs of doing so. My giggest expense will be running the equipment. Can anyone give me a (preferably idiots words of one syllable) guide on how to work out how much things like:

laptops

fax machine/scanner/printer

lights

cost please?

I work from home permanently, but haven't a clue about costs. It all just gets lumped in with the house bills. I even pay my own broadband..... :wall:

Errr - what's a "fax machine"?!

Can you do it on the basis of using a room at home as an office...yearly gas/elec divided by the number of rooms (excluding kitcnen , toilet, bathroom etc)

Any other ideas?

BBx :D

I think Buffie's suggestion is the most practical (measuring each piece of equipment is devilish complicated - and then you'd have to guess anyway at how often you would use it in an average year). Me and the missus permanently use the largest downstairs room in the house as a study from where we (allegedly!) work.

For tax purposes we simply work out the fraction of the house-space (a guess) - basically one fifth - and then take that fraction of your average leccy (light) and gas (heating) bill.

add on top of that printer ink - fax paper/cartridges - paper for the printer - broadband costs (you might deduct a fraction for personal use... ) - and you're done!

you'll find it's a surprisingly small amount - and the boss will be pleasantly surprised! so you may need to add in the cost of a giant water-cooler and an industrial-sized coffee machine!!

(if you really wanted to get into it - you should also consider the depreciation on your equipment - that your company would be using free of charge... but that's not something I could guess at from this distance!!)

You can, I understand, get a refund from the Tax Man - a super duper high flyer like you must be earning pots of cash - and a contrbution from the tax man will help pay for holidays in teepees

:lol::lol: Holidays in Teepees - yes..... deep joy!! (Never again!) :D

Most of my energy consumption goes on the kettle and the toaster - seriously. My use of both in the autumn / winter increases and the electric bill rockets.
