Minnie&Moose Posted March 14, 2010 Share Posted March 14, 2010 Our hens have ranged within electrified netting for 18 months without any losses to foxes as yet. We keep the fence on all the time, including during the night when the hens are locked in their cube & run. We very occasionally come home to find an escapee making merry in the garden but it's usually a sign that it's time to recharge the battery. karlotta Posted March 14, 2010 Share Posted March 14, 2010 I have electric fences for both my flocks (LF and bantams) and it definately keeps the foxes out and keeps the chickens in most of the time. On a rare occasion one hops over but they regret it as they can't work out how to get back in and don't try again! I have a family of foxes living next door and lost a couple of girls to them just prior to getting the fence so it really works. I have 3 batteries for them so I always have one on charge. I also have big dogs (70kg) and while they don't try and get to the hens they did touch the fence once each and didn't try a second time so I think a fox would get a nasty surprise! karlotta Posted March 14, 2010 Share Posted March 14, 2010 They do have a little squawk and don't tend to touch it a second time intentionally! I found my ex-batts were worst at working it out! I don't think it hurts them really, just a shock! I use Hotline energisers and leisure batteries from my local caravan store and Scats (scats was a bit cheaper). Where would you recommend getting them from and what sort of price would be reasonable? Does anyone have any second hand ones they don't want and would like to sell to me?
