Advice for x3 Hampshire sussex 5 weeks old

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

We have just become new chicken owners & have been wondering when you can introduce treats? Where do you get chick grit from as the country store only had 'mixed grit' & when do you start prophylaxis worming ?

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,

Lau

As they are young I wouldn't give them treats until they are a bit older, perhaps 10 weeks roughly. Look online for chick grit it's not that uncommon, or you could ask your local pet shops if they can order it specially. Not sure about worming but I think ours were 16 weeks when they were first wormed, although we got them at 12 weeks or something. They hadn't been wormed before though.

Chick grit is available on line, you will only need a bit as before long they will be on the mixed stuff. You can get pigeon grit or budgie grit from pet shops - avoid anything with calcium/crushed shells in as chicks dont need extra calcium, what you need is flint grit or similar

A little lettuce is ok from about 4 weeks, crushed corn about the same age, grain corn from about 7 or 8 weeks

Introduce the grit when you start feeding treats

I normally worm my youngsters when I move them to larger quarters at about 12 weeks, they are wormed for the week prior to the move so the old pen can be thoroughly cleaned and they go on to a new larger clean pen

All looking good & looks like they are in fact 10-12 weeks with some mention of being 15 weeks. Anyway they're growing well, coping with being handled & over on growers pellets now. They seem to love dandilion leaves & sweetcorn & not really bothered by corn. My they are spoilt but so rewarding. Thanks everyone.
