It's great to hear that schools are teaching students how to make real food ... there are an awful lot of adults who just don't cook.

 

We did cookery at school, as well as woodwork and metalwork, both boys and girls. My mum was a fabulous cook and was not impressed with some of the lessons - one week we had to make a sponge cake, and the next week make a packet sponge and compare the difference! We did do beef stew, and crumble, and omelettes.

 

I also remember a rather strange lesson where we had to iron a tablecloth, lay a table and make a cup of coffee using a percolator. I can truthfully say that I've never used a coffee percolator since!

Olly-my sister has had to do the comparing thing. A few weeks ago she made some sort of pie thing, it looked truely horrible to me. It was a tin of mushrom soup, a tin of tuna with crisps and breadcrumbs sprinkled on the top They are supossed to be making something along those lines but using all fresh ingredients but she hasn't done it yet.

 

So far both sisters have made-scones, flapjack, soup, biscuits with cherries, pizza, beef mince, spag bol and some other stuff.

 

Food tech for me was a waste of time really as i've learnt to look from watching mum cook so all the meals she makes i can make too. However its probably done good for my brother as otherwise he has done no cooking because has no interest in it whatsoever.

We compare but we make the product in school (school provides all ingredients) and we compare it with shop bought products.

 

The last one was school made apple pie versus Tescos.

 

 

We compare taste, ingredients and cost.

Ours all cook at school but the teachers seem to be trapped in the 70's when it comes to what they choose to cook. We tweek the ingredients at home and it usually ends up with the teachers asking them for tips as to how their food turns out better than hers
