jam
Hi all, Im planning to put my chicks in a brooder in the shed when they hatch, so would I need a 175watt or a 250watt Infra red bulb, as itll be a bit chillier in the shed than indoors
TAJ
How many chicks? I use a 150w bulb, but they are normally indoors for the 1st 1-2 weeks and my shed is brick built - the key thing is adjusting the height of the heat lamp to maintain the temperature. Redwing
If you can hang the lamp quite low over the brooder the 175w one will do for up to about 15 chicks You can get a dimmer switch for the plug (its a box that the plug plugs in to and then the unit plugs in to the wall socket, that means you can have a better control over the heat, you can also get a lamp with a dimmer button which is handy You'll need more control over the heat in a shed or garage as it wont hold the heat as well, of course you can always higher and lower the lamp to suit - use a chain to do this - dont hang the lamp by the cable If you do choose to use a 250w bulb a ceramic holder would be safer than a plastic one
