BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
it appears that 2 of my chooks have NFM (Northern Fowl Mite)- i just want to make sure that i have done things correctly. i have bathed all the flock (with fresh water every time) in baby shampoo dried them off sprayed their backsides with Ardap ( on advice from vet). i have also given them a few drops of frontline on each chook. cleaned eglu with pressure washer and put in new bedding. i am about to give a tin of catfood for the extra protein. anything else?? oh and one other thing - i was thinking of buying new plastic roosting bars as a spare, would this be a good idea? Egluntyne
I'd put diatom in all the nooks and crannies on the Eglu too. Not sure I would do anything else to the hens as regards treatment. It might be too much for their systems to cope with. If you are using wooden roosting bars, I'd definitely get plastic ones.
BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
i cant seem to find where to buy diatom when i asked at my local feeds supplier (large one) they looked at me gone out, i've had similar responses elsewhere. the wooden roosting bars have been sprayed and sealed in a plastic bag for a couple of hours. - i was thinking to get some plastic ones anyway, i will now. i did the chickens with frontline a couple of weeks ago as i had loads left for the cat and dog and the vet prescribed something else - she told me to try a few drops on the chickens rather than dispose of it (its what she does - even though its not licenced for poultry) and told me theres no need for egg withdrawal. i thought my bluebelle was having a moult as she has a bare bottom - until i washed her yesterday, and thought how sore her bum looked. thats when i saw what i thought was NFM. so i have done all the chickens and found another looking similar without feather loss. i rang the vet and He said use the ardap on the backside of each. today bluebelle looks much more comfortable and the skin is looking less sore i'm waffling on now - but i am going to look for some vaseline in the depths of my cupboard and slap that on............talking about my cupboard my hubby recently found some old pregnancy testing kits in there.......9 years out of date!! haha lol (hubby got a panic shock when he found those)
Snowy
Have you tried Merrydale for the diatom Bertie? Can't remember where I got mine from - it may have been Omlet, but I'm fairly sure Merrydale would have it.

Saronne
Hi Bertie, Good old Chicken Dave. I was at Welland Valley Feed in MH on Sunday (Is that what he meant?) - didn't notice it, but I'd give them a ring. You might also try SAPS in Oakham. But I think I may have bought mine on Ebay. Saronne
Not sure it was me, Bertie. I was certainly there in the chicken department around 2.00-ish. But the only person I spoke to was the young girl behind the cash till. I did linger at the notice board , though. Glad to hear your chicken's bum is better. Lavenders_Blue
Hi Bertie, Good old Chicken Dave. I was at Welland Valley Feed in MH on Sunday (Is that what he meant?) - didn't notice it, but I'd give them a ring. You might also try SAPS in Oakham. But I think I may have bought mine on Ebay. Saronne x SAPS in Oakham does sell diatom but I have only ever seen it in the small shaker tins (Net tex I think) so not a very economical way to buy it. Might save you a trip out there?! BERTIE MCSQUIRTY
i've ordered some diatom from omlet, just added a few extra bits too snowy - i will pm you his details - he mainly deals in warrens, advertises in welland valley feeds, and was recommended to me by a NFU chicken / egg rep. his set up is very good, and he knows alot about chickens. he's only got a few left at the moment but is collecting 50 chicks soon to bring on. Chickens bum looks really good today
Saronne
Yes, Chicken Dave does sell a lot of Warrens - but he sometimes has pure breeds, too. My Light Sussexs, Legbars and Marans were from him and he's also had RIR and a few Pekins, too. Give him a ring, Snowy. He's a nice chap and a bit of a character - and very reasonably priced.
