nataliesbanks
I have four chickens, all appear to be fine and lay consistantly. A few weeks ago I noticed what looked like a few specks of blood on the egg shell. The egg inside was normal. Yesterday and today the egg has had a lot of blood on the shell. I can't see any round any of their vents. They are all behaving normally etc, so I'm not sure what to do. I'd be grateful for any thoughts? Thankyou
Pikey
I've had this with a couple of mine especially when they first start laying. I think its just a blood vessel bursting......bit like when you have a cold and you've blown your nose too hard. If nothing still coming out of the vent now I don't think anything to worry about. Perhaps find out which one it is and keep an eye on them.
Redwing
the odd smear of blood on an egg is normal especially if it is a large egg If the egg has blood speckles on it do a double check for red mite in the coop as that is a classic sign (not always the case though)
Guest
.... Perhaps find out which one it is and keep an eye on them. I'd also advise keeping an eye on whichever one is doing it, if she's laying particularly large eggs, she'll be more at risk of a prolapse. BocBoc
Phew - that's a relief to know - one of our four girls laid an egg with blood smeared on one end. It was a whopper though - 100g - it probably made her eyes water too!!
