I've been searching high and low to find some softwood wood chippings to use in our run. I really need to get rid of them and put fresh down, but can only find bark chippings. Is this OK to use?

Bark chippings are okay, but they will get soggy and smelly very quickly. Your run would need to be well ventilated too. How about ringing round some tree surgeons as you might be able to some free or cheap wood chippings from them.

B&Q do wood chips

 

I wouldnt use bark personally there is a lot of talk about it harbouring spores but apart from that and on a practical note it does get very soggy

I've just called B&Q and they now have some hardwood chips in so I'm off there this afternoon - they're terracotta coloured, didn't have the natural ones in so my white girls will be a lovely shade of pink!

 

Do I need to take away everything that's been down and put the new down, or can I just put the new on top of the old (removing obvious poos)? I have been poo picking once a week.

I guess it depends on how long the old have been down

 

If they just need topping up then add new on top after you have poo picked and removed any damp patches

 

If they have been down a while and are breaking up then I'd be tempted to replace them all
