alisonclair
Hi My ex-bat, Martha, who I got last September, is acting a little oddly. Yesterday while I was up the allotment (where she is kept with four others and a cockerel) she spent quite alot of time in the hen house - not in the nest box, but just on the floor. She came out only occasioanlly, and I saw her take some water. This morning she was out when I went up, but looking very lethargic, and did a lot of just standing aroud - almost looked like she was falling asleep on the spot, as she kept closing her eyes. Anyway, I had to go to work, and when I came back late this afternoon she was on the floor in the hen house again, just sitting there. Couldn't even tempt her out with sweetcorn although she did come out momentarily to have some water again. Then she just stood there, did a runny white and clear poo. She has now gone back in the house again. I give her and my other VermX ever six weeks, plus poultry spice and mineral powder. They are fed layers pellets and corn in the afternoon. Any ideas as to what is wrong? Could she be broody or is she more likely poorly. Thank you Alison
Egluntyne
She sounds poorly rather than broody to me. My instinct would be to worm her with Flubenvet, as her symptoms hint at a worm infestation. However, it might be worth taking her to the vet for a look see.
alisonclair
thanks for your advice. where would I get flubenvet? Many thanks Alison
Snowy
I agree, definitely poorly - worm with Flubenvet and see a vet if no improvement. There are online suppliers if you google it, or most chicken feed suppliers also stock it now.
chelsea
I say poorly too. If she was broody you would definitely get a look/sound of annoyance from Martha if you removed her from the nest. Also broody poos are HUGE and very very smelly. Hope she gets better soon.
alisonclair
Thanks for all your replies. I have ordered some wormer, so hopefully will be here in a couple of days. If she gets worse before then I will take her to the vet - not that they are that experienced with chickens.......
alisonclair
Hi again everyone. Still waiting for the wormer to arrive. Martha is a lot better today. This morning I found what I think is a 'lash' in the nest box. Looked like some kind of meat - having looked on google, I am pretty sure this is what it is. Please can someone tell me what a lash is? Is this why she would have been feeling so poorly (if it is her who laid it, I'm just assuming it is), Anything I can do to help?
