batcatz
Hi, I noticed one of my hens (Bianca) had a small split in the beak (top maxilla ) 2 days ago, but it was fine and wasn't bothering her at all. I've no idea how she did it. I did a search on google and it seemed it would repair like a finger nail. Today a tiny square has broken off at the end of the beak on the right hand side. Difficult to see as she won't keep her head still when I look. I'll take a photo later. Again, she has no trouble eating and drinking. Just wondered what to do. Will it grow back, will it be fine like it is or does it need trimming or filing. Is this something I can do or is it a vet visit? Edit: changed mandible to maxilla after checking on wikipedia. Learn something new everyday! Edit again: It is the tip of her beak that is gone. It seems to have squared off nicely though and she had no problem gobbling up pasta n sweetcorn. The black line (dirt i think) is where top beak ends.
Chucky Mama
She should be fine, I have one with a similar sized piece missing from the bottom and she manages perfectly well.
Egluntyne
I have a bird with a chipped beak, and I think it bothers me more than it bothers her. So long as you hen can eat and drink normally, I wouldn't worry.
