my 9 week old chicks won't feed out of eglu feeder

Recommended Posts

My two girls will only eat off a plate at mo - which isn't going to be good for when the rain comes. Any advice for how to get them to feed out of the eglu food container? I have a sneeking suspicion I should just not give them a choice!

Also - is it normal for them to peck each others bum feathers? Will this settle down?

Flinchy, I suspect that at 9 weeks they cannot physically reach into the grub to get the food........my chicks used these http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/1.5kg_Chicken_Feeder.html and cage cups http://www.flytesofancy.co.uk/chickenhouses/Coop_cups_galley_pots.html until they got big enough to eat from the grubs, they did have their mum to copy too.

And yes it is fairly normal for them to peck at each others feathers but not acceptable behaviour....either squirt with a water spray if you catch them doing it or use an anti-peck spray to try & deter them........purple spray might work too.

I am using a feeder similar to the top link for mine who are just a little older :) you'll find they cope a lot better until they get a bit bigger :) Alternatively they can eat out of a GLUG rather than a GRUB, depending on what you have there :)

My 5½ week olds have gone in the eglu and in 24 hrs were using the grub/glug, including 2 bantams. I put them down low and put their other food water containers near by. They started using their old containers, then noticed the other water/food and were fine. In the past I have put a bit of food on the ground by the grub - that attracts them over and then they see the food in the grub.

The trick is to start it almost at ground level and slowly move it up as they grow.

Thanks for the replies - the girls are now feeding out of the eglu grub container - I think they just needed to have no other options! They started a day after I aseked you all what to do!

One is still biting the other's bum feathers though - I am sure this has a nicer name - you know the sort of skirt area whith soft downy feathers by thier vent!! I want Shizzle to stop doing it but she has got a taste now - is she bored? Can I encourage her to stop in some way? Help Omleteers - your years of collected experience is called for in this little slice of Cardiff.
