suitable chickens

Recommended Posts

:) so still cannot decide on suitable chickens! have just found the guidelines from omlet that say an eglu is not suitable for heavy birds and the chicken hybrids i have been looking at e.g light sussex are heavy?! Which are the most suitable for an eglu and for being friendly?(i am out of omlets delivery for theirs!) :!::!:

A light sussex will be fine in an Eglu. Its Birds like Orpingtons, Brahmas a Cochin that are too large really.

For Eggs , the Light Sussex will be great or try a Rhode island red . To be honest if you pop along to a local supplier, most hybrid layers should fit well too, around 3 would be maximum.

If you are more interested in getting diverse breeds over egg laying potential, perhaps try some Pekin Bantams, you will be able to fit perhaps 5 or so in and Eglu.

Our hybrids have been very easy and I would recommend them to start with. Our speckledys have been lovely, very attractive nice shaped proper chickens, the only ones I have been told to avoid are black rocks, can be unfriendly according to our breeder.Amber and white star are meant to be pretty docile

The Omlet Gingernuts and Miss Pepperpots are both friendly good natured medium weight hybrid birds. I know that you are outside delivery area, but this old guide below gives the names of similar suitable hybrids. The prices on this link are way out of date now, but the advice given is still sound.

As well as my Omlet chickens, I've also had an Amber Star hybrid (medium weight), a lovely docile, friendly chook.

I plumped for hybrids first time round, but when I get more hens as mine retire, I will consider pure breeds and there are loads of them to choose from too. Good luck choosing.
