Does anyone have a free ranging cockerel?

Recommended Posts

Indiana, our Polish boy has been moved from the bantam pen to the big girls pen,as the bants were getting a bit fed up with his 'attentions'

The big girls do free range every so often,so Indie will be with them, but I am concerned as he is horribly territorial & leaps on me as soon as I go into the pen.I have visions of him chasing me around the garden,& out of it if he can :lol:

Does anyone else free range their boy & if so,how is it working out?

I do but mine's a sweetie so no probs there. I wonder what you could do - any point/chance of letting them out but keeping him in? Or keeping out of everybody's way and just getting involved when you herd them back in using a treat as a bribe? Or he might be unbothered by you as he has the wide open spaces to play in? Or take a broom with you. I know the real answer is to make him realise you are the boss not him, by picking him up and taking him about with you (stick his head down between your arm and your body) but I saw a LF chamois poland boy the other day and he was squaring up to me through his cage; somehow smaller cockerals are more scary than big ones

Spongebob the frizzle pekin - he is a devil - he will peck you jump at you no matter what. He's a nowt! Bingo his son is a monkey too, but nothing like his dad. I can put up with Bingo - pick him up & he is devine!

Scooter the silkie boy, so far has been very well behaved - he is a love round the garden - no fear of him.

Boon my big cochin - has suddenly gone a bit aggressive towards my chicken sitter & stamps his fet at my husband. He was an absolute wuss. We are monitoring him carefully. If he ever goes for my hubby, then he will have to go. We've got to sort out his spurs this weekend too - they have gone a bit too pointy for my liking. Heaven help hubby catching him! You should be fine letting bantam cockerels free range, but let them know who is boss. I go round with a big stick that I bang on the floor. Or the garden brush.
