hi everyone,

 

i have been reading bits bobs on here about tortoises. we have a horsefield tortoise called george and he is 5 years old (its his birthday tomorrow).he lives in a vivarium, which he is running up and down and making a right racket in as a type!!!

 

After reading on here that vivariums are bad for tortoises, we are thinking of getting a rabbit/guinea pig type hutch for him to live in inside. would anyone who has one of these be able to add a picture for us to have a look at the set up inside.

 

Also, he hasnt yet hibernated and after reading on here that some people dont hibernate their tortoises, we dont think we will be hibernating george. do you think that this will affect him in anyway.

Hi - is the brown bedding material special for tortoises? Is that what they call substrate?

If you have a tortoise can you not go away for a weekend, must you always have a tortoise sitter? I need to ask all these questions to see if a tortoise is the right pet for us?

The substrate is called Eco-Earth.I have since changed Ishi's bedding to just Newspaper and my Leopard to Pro-Rep 50/50 Sand Soil mix with a layer of Redi-Grass.

 

I would say you would need a Tortoise sitter even for just a weekend away to make sure no bulbs have blown,Check for any tortoises that have flipped themselves on their backs and can't right themselves and to fill up water & food!
